Position Summary:

To work jointly with a structural engineers in the design and development of structural removal and installation drawings for U.S. naval and commercial ships/facilities.


Assist structural technicians and engineers with analysis of ship as-built drawings and development of full-scale CAD models of ship compartments for use in the development of new ship installation drawings.

With minimal guidance, lead structural ship check activities.

Expertly identify installation interferences onboard ship (waveguides, operating gear, access, shock, etc.).

Independently perform drawing integration review meetings with all affected disciplines.

Develop layout and details of structural installation drawings with minimal design input from lead engineer.

Solve material compatibility issues (steel and aluminum high-strength vs. low-strength tradeoffs).

Correctly apply and check all weld symbols to installation drawings.

Mentor level I and level II technicians in the design and layout of ship design drawings.

Check the work of level I and level II technicians.

Responsible for finding and checking NSN numbers and material specifications.

Responsible for contacting material suppliers and obtaining supplier part numbers and build sheets.

Capable of developing solutions to design problems on the spot with minimal drawing rework.

With lead engineer support, lead ship-class design efforts (develop prefabrication drawings, etc)

Advise and assist engineering lead with drawing estimates and personnel training.

Support engineering lead with drawing revisions and LARS.

Identify areas of improvement and develop tools to improve efficiency in the work flow process.

Other duties as assigned


10+ years of structural design experience which included computer drafting. Demonstrable knowledge of NAVY structural installation drawings, ship construction methodology, GSO and ABS use and applicability, weld symbols and material ordering.

Proficient with 2D CAD software and Microsoft Excel. Strong computer skills. Ability to travel for shipchecks. Experienced in layout and use of technical drawings.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Required:  AS or 2 year technical degree in Engineering Technology or related discipline. High School and 5 years related experience may be substituted for AS degree.

(A four year technical degree in a related field can count 4 years toward the  10 year experience requirement)

Preferred: Some education/certificate in 2D and 3D Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and/or welding.

Preferred Skills

Skilled with AutoDesk AutoCAD 2D and 3D, previous shipcheck experience.

AutoDesk AutoCAD 2D and 3D Certified, or equivalent CAD certification.

Competent with AWS welding symbol terminology, Mil-Specs, and NSN material numbers.
