2017-52 Structural Engineer II (Gig Harbor, WA)

Position Summary:

To design structural foundations and/or hull modifications for U.S. Navy and commercial ships and to mentor/train junior engineers. Candidate would be responsible for leading ship-class efforts with full range of design integration.  Candidate would be responsible for performing structural calculations to support all design work as well as checking final drawings for accuracy, efficiency of design, cost effectiveness and functionality.

Responsibilities:

Analyze ship as-built and/or modification drawings to determine impact of proposed ship upgrades.

Coordinate all structural work between multiple alterations and integrate with all affected disciplines/team mates.

Lead junior engineers and technicians on ship check activities, such as identifying existing ship structure and foundations and recording sizes and locations in respect to internal ship datums and frames.

Confirm all junior engineer and technician design work and interference control plans onboard ship.

Expert in ship construction techniques, terminology and general characteristics (port/starboard, fore/aft, ABL, CG, mold lines, V-lines, etc.)

Solve material compatibility issues (steel and aluminum high-strength vs. low-strength tradeoffs).

Answer drawing LARs with cost-effective design solutions.

Responsible for all 2D structural analysis calculations dealing with equipment foundations and ship structure modifications.

Lead structural design projects for assigned ship-class.

Check all KES structural drawings meet government or ABS requirements and integrate with other engineering disciplines.

Expert at all AWS and MIL-STD welding symbols and terminology and able to specify required welding processes.

Responsible for working closely with and mentoring Structural Engineer Level I.

Integrate with Structural Engineer Level III on complex design projects (i.e. FEA models)

Coordinate all design work and work closely with lead structural engineer.

Other duties as assigned.

Experience:

5+ years of naval structural design experience which includes 2D CAD drawing development.

Candidate must possess/have ability to obtain a DoD Secret Level Clearance.

Must have strong computer skills and be proficient with 2D CAD software and Microsoft Excel.

Must be willing and able to travel for shipchecks.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Required:  Bachelor degree in Naval Architecture, Civil, Mechanical or Marine Engineering. 10 years related experience may be substituted for BS degree.

Preferred: At minimum EIT certificate. PE desired.

Preferred Skills

Previous employment with an engineering planning department. Some welding skills/background.

Some background with Solid Works, FeMAP, ANSYS, PRO-E, MathCAD and 3D AutoCAD.
